Building a fire is one of the most critical skills you can master.  Fire provides light, heat and comfort, both mental and physical.

While almost everyone knows how to use a butane lighter, their fuel will eventually run out and those lighters are unreliable in cold weather.  Put a lighter in your kit as a backup, but everyone needs a fire steel in their emergency preparedness kit that will allow them to start a fire under virtually any condition.
