A condom can be stretched to an amazing size without breaking.  They are the smallest, most durable, water proof container that you will ever find.  Small enough to carry in your wallet, a single latex condom can hold up to five gallons of water.

Here are just a few ideas on how you might use a condom in your emergency or disaster plan.

• Use a latex condom for water storage or carry (see note below)
  
• Stretch one over a box of ammunition and tie a knot.
• Stretch one over a box of crackers or any other food.
• Fill one with flashlight batteries and toss them into your pack.
• Stretch one over the muzzle of your rifle or shotgun to keep out debris.
• Stretch one over any metal item, squirt in a little oil, tie a knot and you can even bury it.
• Stretch one over your flashlight and tie a knot to make it diver ready.
• Use one to keep your candles dry.
• Fill one with rice or other grain for storage or carry.
• Stretch one over your medical kit to keep it dry.
• Stretch one over a handgun and tie a knot.
• Fill one with water and use it as a large magnifying glass to start a fire in the sunlight.
• Protect your cell phone, PDA, MP3 Player, Digital Camera, etc.
• Fill them with dirt or sand to form a sandbag-type barrier. (use a funnel)
  
• Put one on your head to amuse your kids when you are camping out.

Uses for condoms in emergency or disaster situations are only limited by your imagination.

• These are made of latex, not vinyl.  Vinyl which contains chemicals that are harmful to your health if ingested.  Never use a vinyl product for your drinking water supply.  Water bed and swimming pool liners are vinyl.
• Before using a condom for drinking water storage or carry, you should first wash it thoroughly to remove any contaminants and/or lubricant. [ick!]  Use a mild liquid dish soap, not a harsh detergent.  You can rinse with hydrogen peroxide if you have any. Lemon juice or citric acid will also work.  Bleach will damage a condom.  (Tequila?)
• You can also use a condom for non-potable water, for cleaning, etc.
  
• You should carry a water-filled condom in a sturdy container such as an old bucket, a cardboard box , a purse, a sock, etc.  If no supportive container is available, you can carefully tie the end of a partially filled condom to a branch or wrap it in cloth tee-shirt, pillow case, etc.
• Tie a knot in the sleeves of a long-sleeved shirt, drop a water filled condom down each sleeve and sling the shirt around your neck or over your shoulder to carry.
  
• You can store water-filled condoms by stacking them between two solid objects or by tying them together in a blanket, a sheet or a tarp.
  
• Puncture the condom to release the water.
• You will lose all of your current apprehension to using a condom for water storage or carry in a situation where there are no alternatives. 
• Never attempt to reuse a condom for any reason, under any circumstances.  DUH!

As a backup, the minuscule size in your kit and the extremely low (almost free) cost of the amazing condom makes it a no-brainer.
